KPK to be inaugurated Monday
JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri is set to inaugurate
five members of the executive body of the newly-established
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Monday, an official
said.
Cabinet deputy secretary Erman Radjagukguk confirmed on
Saturday that the KPK inauguration would take place at the State
Palace.
"We have sent out the invitations," he said.
The five members of the KPK executive body are Taufiequrachman
Ruki, Amien Sunaryadi, Sjaruddin Rasul, Tumpak Hatorangan
Panggabean and Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas.
Law No. 30/2002 requires that the KPK must be operational by
Dec. 27. Megawati signed the presidential decree on KPK on
Friday.
Observers earlier suggested the government inaugurate the KPK
quickly in a bid to inform the public about the legal standing of
the commission, tasked with combating corruption.
Dubbed a super-body, KPK is expected to be able to lead the
country's drive against corruption, something that has not been
addressed by legal enforcement institutions. -- JP
