KPK suspects university admission corruption extends beyond Unila and Unsoed

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) suspects that corruption in new student admissions is not limited to Lampung University (Unila) and Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed).

“The suspected conditioning practices in the new student admissions process are believed to occur not only at Unila or Unsoed, but are also thought to be common at other universities,” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the KPK’s Red and White Building in Jakarta on Monday.

For this reason, Budi said the KPK is urging members of the public who are aware of suspected corruption in new student admissions to report it to the anti-corruption agency.

“The KPK can certainly step in when there is an alleged criminal act of corruption occurring at other locations or at other universities,” he said.

According to him, once the public has reported the suspected corruption to the KPK, the anti-corruption agency will review it.

“It will be reviewed and analysed regarding what the follow-up should be, and the approach taken by the KPK will depend on the issues conveyed by the public,” he said.

In addition to urging the public, he said the KPK is asking universities to seriously improve new student admissions so that they are conducted with greater integrity.

“Of course, with concrete steps. Not stopping at commitments, but genuinely carrying out efforts to improve the system,” he said.

The KPK previously conducted a sting operation related to alleged bribery in new student admissions at Unila in August 2022.

In that case, the KPK named Unila Rector Prof Karomani, Unila Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof Heryandi, Unila Senate Chair Muhammad Basri, and Andi Desfiandi, a private sector party, as suspects.

Four years later, in 2026, the KPK conducted a sting operation related to alleged corruption in new student admissions at Unsoed.

The KPK subsequently named Unsoed Rector Prof Akhmad Sodiq, Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof Norman Arie Prayogo, Unsoed Head of Academic Affairs Eko Sumanto, Mulyono, who is Sodiq’s nephew, as well as Dian Mulia Wardhana and Adhi Wiharto as intermediaries, as suspects in the alleged corruption case involving new student admissions at Unsoed.
