The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has stressed that alleged corruption in the administration and distribution of hajj quotas is a large-scale case. Based on the latest audit, the state financial loss in this case has reached an extraordinary figure of Rp622 billion.

“In this case, the alleged state financial loss is estimated at Rp622 billion. An extremely significant figure, of course,” stated KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the KPK Red and White Building in South Jakarta on Wednesday (18 March).

Audit by the Financial Audit Board and Social Impact

Budi explained that the loss calculation is based on findings from the Financial Audit Board (BPK). All data and findings will be thoroughly tested during the trial process.

Beyond the blow to state finances, the KPK has highlighted the massive social impact. The irregular policies during former Religion Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas’s tenure caused thousands of prospective pilgrims to lose the opportunity to worship.

“This means there were 8,400 prospective pilgrims who did not depart on the regular hajj quota in 2024,” Budi asserted.

Deviation in Quota Allocation

In this case, the KPK has identified two main suspects. The core issue involves the distribution of additional hajj quotas that violated regulations. Indonesia was supposed to receive an additional 20,000 quotas to reduce the long queue of regular hajj applicants.

According to the regulations, the allocation should have been distributed proportionally. However, evidence on the ground suggests alleged manipulation in which the distribution was carried out equally or on a 50:50 basis. This is deemed highly detrimental to regular pilgrims who have been waiting for tens of years.

Witness Examination

To date, KPK investigators continue to trace fund flows and the involvement of other parties. Several officials at the Religion Ministry (Kemenag) and umrah travel service providers have been questioned. One of the witnesses called to provide clarification was Ustaz Khalid Basalamah.

The KPK is committed to resolving this case through the courts to ensure justice for prospective hajj pilgrims.
