KPK Seizes Foreign Currency Worth Around Rp983 Million in Langkat Regent Sting Operation
Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has seized a quantity of foreign currency valued at approximately Rp983 million during a sting operation that ensnared Langkat Regent Syah Afandin, also known as Ondim. “The details are 66,950 Singapore dollars and 11,518 Malaysian ringgit,” said Acting Director of Investigations at the KPK, Achmad Taufik Husein, at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in Jakarta on Friday night. Based on the exchange rate as of 3 July 2026, the value of the foreign currency is estimated to be around Rp983 million. In addition to the foreign currency, the KPK seized cash amounting to Rp247.7 million. Investigators also secured Rp100 million in cash from a former member of the North Sumatra Regional House of Representatives with the initials SYH. “The KPK team in the field managed to secure Rp100 million found under the car seat of the vehicle SYH was travelling in,” he said. Furthermore, investigators discovered 55 pieces of metal suspected to be platinum, with a total weight of approximately 55 kilogrammes, inside Syah Afandin’s car. “Regarding this evidence, we will later examine its authenticity. We will call in an expert to determine the authenticity of this platinum metal,” Taufik stated. Investigators also seized a number of electronic evidence items and documents related to the case. On 3 July 2026, the KPK named Syah Afandin and his former campaign team member for the 2024 regional election, Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu’arif, as suspects in an alleged bribery case concerning projects within the Langkat Regency Government for the 2025–2026 period. Syah Afandin is suspected of receiving a bribe of Rp800 million from a total commitment of Rp1.117 billion given by Yaqub after winning 80 projects in 2025 at the Langkat Regency Education Office and five projects at the Langkat Regency Housing and Settlement Office. In addition to the alleged bribery, the KPK suspects Syah Afandin of receiving gratuities of up to Rp3.5 billion related to the filling of sub-district head positions, positions in the Langkat Regency Education Office, the appointment of primary and junior high school headmasters, and the procurement of primary school uniforms.
