KPK Reveals Yaqut's Latest Condition: Requires Observation After Surgery
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed the latest condition of former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, a suspect in the alleged Hajj quota corruption case. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that Yaqut is still recovering after undergoing surgery on 29 June 2026. ‘Following the surgery, the medical team at Kramat Jati Police Hospital needs to observe the recovery progress of Mr YCQ,’ Budi told reporters at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in Jakarta, as quoted on Wednesday, 8 June 2026. Budi confirmed that KPK investigators are also continuously monitoring the health development of the former minister. ‘During this suspension of detention process, the KPK is also conducting strict supervision and security through the prisoner escort,’ he added. He said the KPK hopes Yaqut can recover soon so that the legal process related to the Hajj quota case can proceed effectively. ‘Of course, we all want this legal process to run effectively, so that we can soon provide legal certainty to the relevant parties, especially to those who have been named as suspects,’ he stated. The KPK began investigating the alleged corruption in Indonesia’s 2023-2024 Hajj quota on 9 August 2025. Subsequently, on 9 January 2026, the KPK named former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and his former special staff member, Ishfah Abidal Aziz alias Gus Alex, as suspects. The KPK then received the audit results from the Supreme Audit Agency on 24 February 2026, which stated that the potential state loss in the case reached IDR 622 billion. Yaqut was detained at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building Detention Centre on 12 March 2026, while Ishfah was detained five days later. Yaqut’s detention status was temporarily changed to house arrest on 19 March 2026 at the family’s request. However, he was returned to the KPK detention centre on 24 March 2026. In the development of the case, the KPK also named two new suspects on 30 March 2026, namely Maktour Operational Director Ismail Adham and former General Chairperson of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Tour Travel Association Asrul Aziz Taba. Both were subsequently detained on 8 June 2026. On 24 June 2026, the KPK suspended Yaqut’s detention to the Police Hospital after he experienced health problems in his digestive tract.
