KPK reveals sting operation at Unsoed Rectorate over new student admissions

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed a sting operation (OTT) against the leadership of Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed) in connection with new student admissions.

“It relates to alleged receipt of payments by state officials in the new student admissions process,” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists in Jakarta on Friday.

According to Budi, the KPK regrets that the sting operation was necessary because it concerns alleged corruption in the education sector.

“The KPK regrets the alleged corruption taking place in educational spaces. Spaces that should not only be filled with the teaching of knowledge, but also the instilling of values and character,” he said.

Moreover, he continued, the alleged corruption occurred at the very beginning of a student’s journey to becoming a university student.

“This means transactions were already taking place as new students entered the campus gates. Gates that should serve as the gateway to the nation’s aspirations and future,” Budi said.

Previously, the KPK confirmed it had conducted a sting operation against the Unsoed Rectorate leadership.

Those detained include Unsoed Rector Prof. Akhmad Sodiq, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Noor Farid, and Vice-Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Norman Arie Prayogo.

The KPK has 24 hours to determine the legal status of those arrested in the sting operation, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).
