KPK Reveals Seven Sting Operations in Riau, Exposing Persistent Cycle of Corruption
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed it has conducted seven sting operations (OTT) in Riau Province since 2007. The latest case occurred in Kuantan Singingi Regency (Kuansing), with the naming of Regent Suhardiman Amby as a suspect in an alleged bribery case. The KPK assesses that this series of enforcement actions demonstrates that corrupt practices in Riau continue to recur despite various law enforcement efforts over nearly two decades. Acting Director of Investigations at the KPK, Achmad Taufik Husein, stated that the sting operation in Kuansing marks the seventh enforcement action carried out by the agency in the Riau Province area. “We convey that this enforcement effort by the KPK is the seventh time in the Riau Province area,” Taufik said. According to him, the majority of cases handled by the KPK in Riau are related to bribery practices or irregularities in the procurement of goods and services. Taufik explained that the first enforcement operation conducted by the KPK in Riau occurred in 2007. At that time, the uncovered case was related to alleged corruption in the procurement of fire engines. This case marked the beginning of a series of KPK enforcement actions against various alleged criminal acts of corruption involving state officials in the region. Five years later, precisely in 2012, the KPK again took enforcement action related to alleged corruption in the procurement of facilities for the National Sports Week (PON). Subsequently, in 2014, the anti-corruption agency uncovered an alleged bribery case related to land-use conversion. According to Taufik, these cases form part of a recurring pattern of corruption in Riau Province. The series of KPK enforcement actions continued in 2021 with a case of alleged bribery related to cultivation rights titles (HGU). This case later expanded to ensnare a former Head of the Regional Office of the National Land Agency (BPN) as a suspect. Then, in 2023, the KPK again took enforcement action in a case of alleged budget cuts. Most recently, on 3 November 2025, the KPK conducted another sting operation related to an alleged extortion case within the Riau Provincial Government.
