KPK Reveals Reasons for Yaqut's House Arrest: GERD and Case Handling Strategy
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed the reasons behind the change in detention status for former Minister of Religious Affairs (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, or Gus Yaqut, to house arrest. The KPK stated that the reasons include health factors as well as strategies for handling the case.
KPK’s Deputy for Enforcement and Execution, Asep Guntur Rahayu, initially mentioned that numerous factors contributed to the change in Yaqut’s detention status, one of which was health-related. He then explained the results of Yaqut’s health assessment from that morning, indicating that he suffers from acute Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and asthma.
“There are many factors besides the health condition. This morning’s results, which we are informing, show that the individual has acute GERD, and an endoscopy and colonoscopy have been performed. I’m not entirely familiar with the medical terms, so colleagues can check later. The individual also has asthma,” said Asep to reporters at the KPK Building in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (24/3/2026).
Asep stated that the strategy for handling the case was also a consideration in switching Yaqut to house arrest. Yaqut’s health examination was conducted at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta until that morning.
“So, this is certainly one of the conditions, just one requirement, alongside other necessities, in this case, strategies for handling the matter to ensure it proceeds smoothly,” he said.
Asep mentioned that Yaqut will be questioned again tomorrow in his capacity as a suspect in the Hajj quota corruption case. He will provide updates on the handling of the case tomorrow.
“Of course, we will proceed according to the needs in handling this case. We will ensure the matter runs smoothly and quickly. The reason for returning it is also to accelerate the handling of the case,” he said.
For information, Yaqut arrived at the KPK Building at 10:32 WIB to be detained again in the Hajj quota corruption case. Yaqut was wearing an orange detention vest.
“Alhamdulillah, I could pay my respects to my mother, to my mum,” said Yaqut upon arriving at the KPK Building.
Yaqut did not provide many comments. He acknowledged that the request to change his detention status to house arrest came from his family.
“It is our request,” he said.
