KPK Reveals Causes of Corruption Among Regional Heads

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has emphasised that the phenomenon of corruption ensnaring regional heads is not due to a single factor. The anti-graft body highlighted individual integrity, systemic weaknesses, and high political costs as the primary triggers.

KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo explained that corruption is often influenced by various aspects. “Corruption often does not arise from a single factor, but is influenced by various aspects, both related to individual integrity and systemic weaknesses that open up opportunities for irregularities,” Budi told journalists in Jakarta on Saturday.

One of the most crucial factors acknowledged by the KPK is the high political cost of general elections and regional head elections. Based on field findings, there is a linear relationship between campaign funding support and the efforts of elected regional heads to seek profits once in office.

A study by the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate shows that high campaign costs are a fundamental issue driving corrupt practices, both before and after a person is elected as a public official. KPK data records that 15 regional heads resulting from the 2024 Regional Elections have been named as suspects between 2025 and mid-July 2026. The KPK continues to stress the importance of improving the electoral system and strengthening the integrity of prospective leaders to break the chain of corruption rooted in high political costs.
