The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is reported to have carried out a sting operation (OTT) against a regional head in the Solo Raya area on Thursday afternoon (9/7). There is no clarity yet on what case the operation relates to. Several reports suggest the female regent, together with an aide and a head of a regional government agency (OPD), was taken to Surakarta Police Headquarters for questioning.

According to Media Indonesia’s observations, the atmosphere at Surakarta Police Headquarters remained quiet until midnight on Thursday. Even so, reports indicate the questioning of the regent and her two civil servant subordinates was being carried out on the third floor of the main building, on the northern side.

Journalists were not allowed to approach the main building where the questioning was taking place, and were only permitted to observe from a distance. The Chief of Surakarta Police, Commissioner Catur Wahyono, briefly approached the crowd of journalists, but declined to speak before walking away.

Until past 11pm WIB, journalists only witnessed officers assembling on the field in front of the main building before dispersing. So far, there has been no official statement from the KPK regarding the sting operation.

The sting operation that has once again ensnared a regional head shows that the problem of corruption in Indonesia has yet to touch on the root of the issue.
