KPK Re-examines Former Religious Affairs Ministry Official in Hajj Quota Corruption Case

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has re-examined former Director General of Hajj and Umrah at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Hilman Latief, as a witness in the alleged corruption case concerning hajj quotas, following his last examination on 20 May 2026. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo told journalists in Jakarta on Wednesday that Hilman Latief arrived at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building around 9.30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time and was currently being questioned by investigators. Budi stated that investigators still required Hilman Latief’s testimony to complete the case files for four suspects in the special hajj quota management case. The KPK announced the commencement of the investigation into the alleged corruption of Indonesia’s 2023-2024 hajj quotas on 9 August 2025. On 9 January 2026, the KPK named former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and his special staff member, Ishfah Abidal Aziz, also known as Gus Alex, as suspects. Fuad Hasan Masyhur was not named a suspect in the case, despite previously being prevented from travelling abroad. The KPK subsequently received an audit report from the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) on 27 February 2026, which stated that the potential state loss in the case reached Rp622 billion. Yaqut was detained on 12 March 2026 at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building detention centre, while Ishfah was detained on 17 March 2026. Yaqut’s detention status was temporarily changed to house arrest on 19 March 2026 at his family’s request, but he was returned to the detention centre on 24 March 2026. On 30 March 2026, the KPK named two additional suspects: Ismail Adham, the Operational Director of Maktour, and Asrul Aziz Taba, the former Chairman of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Travel Organisers Association (Kesthuri). Both were subsequently detained on 8 June 2026.
