KPK Questions Muhadjir Effendy Regarding Ad Interim Minister of Religious Affairs Appointment
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has requested information from Muhadjir Effendy concerning his duties as the Ad Interim Minister of Religious Affairs in 2022, as well as matters regarding the additional Hajj quota for that same year. These matters are being scrutinised by the KPK as they examine the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Muhadjir Effendy, as a witness in relation to an alleged corruption case involving the 2023-2024 Hajj quota.
“The witness MHJ attended the scheduled examination today. Investigators requested explanations from the witness regarding his assignment as the Ad Interim Minister of Religious Affairs in 2022, as well as regarding the additional quota for 2022,” stated KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo in a statement on Monday (18/05/2026).
Muhadjir stated that he was being questioned in his capacity as the Ad Interim Minister of Religious Affairs in 2022. “It is just that, I served as the ad interim Minister of Religious Affairs in 2022,” Muhadjir said when met at the Merah Putih Building, Jakarta, on Monday (18/05/2026). “There is nothing [wrong], nothing, nothing. It is all safe,” he added.
Muhadjir admitted that he had initially applied to postpone today’s examination with the KPK. However, he decided to honour the investigators’ summons following widespread media coverage regarding his involvement. “Actually, I had submitted a request for postponement, but because there was news from all of you, I felt it would be improper; if I postponed, there might be an impression that I was avoiding it, so I requested to meet now,” he explained.
“Oh, there were not many [questions], I was only the ad interim minister for 20 days. From 30 June to 19 July. Just 20 days, there was not much to be done,” he said.
