KPK Proposes Limiting Party Leaders' Terms, NasDem: Not So Simple
The NasDem Party has responded to the Corruption Eradication Commission’s recommendation on limiting the tenure of political party officials. The KPK previously proposed that party leaders should only serve two terms as general chairman.
NasDem Secretary General Hermawi Taslim appreciated the proposal from the KPK. “In my view, it is valuable input for all of us, including the parties,” Hermawi said via text message on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
However, he stated that the matter of internal party tenure is a complex issue. “Party leadership matters are certainly not as straightforward as analysed by the KPK,” Hermawi remarked.
According to Hermawi, there are various considerations when a party figure is elected as general chairman. “There are many considerations and variations as to why a figure is retained by a party,” he explained.
In addition, Hermawi discussed the internal party cadre system. He claimed that NasDem is one of the parties with the best cadre education process. This is because they have the NasDem National Defence Academy. “Which serves as the central forge for NasDem’s tiered cadre development,” Hermawi stated.
NasDem, according to Hermawi, conducts tiered cadre development every year from the central level at the ABN to the district level. “The frequency varies depending on the available budget, whether from Banpol (Political Party Financial Assistance) or internal capabilities,” he added.
Previously, the KPK’s Directorate of Monitoring study found at least four issues in political party governance. The four points are the absence of a roadmap for political education implementation, integrated cadre system standards, financial reporting systems, and oversight institutions.
The anti-corruption agency then formulated several recommendations for improving party governance. One of them is through revisions to Law No. 2 of 2011 on Political Parties, particularly Article 29 on political recruitment.
The study proposes a limit on the leadership tenure of political party general chairmen. “To ensure the implementation of cadre development, regulation of the general chairman’s leadership limit to a maximum of two terms of office is needed,” the KPK report stated on 20 April 2026.
