The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has affirmed that the investigation into the hajj quota corruption case, which implicates former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas or Gus Yaqut, is ongoing. The KPK will present the progress of the investigation on Monday (30 March).

“With permission to state that, alhamdulillah, thanks to the support from the public for us in handling this hajj quota case, today there has been very good progress. But we cannot disclose it yet. We will announce it on Monday,” said Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the KPK, Asep Guntur Rahayu, at the KPK building in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Thursday (26 March 2026).

Asep declined to provide details on whether the update to be announced relates to the determination of new suspects in the case. He asked all parties to wait until Monday (30 March).

“Because, of course, the public is currently in the Eid atmosphere, with people returning from holidays, and on the road back to their respective places after the Eid break. So we will announce it on Monday. Hopefully, by Monday, everyone will have returned to their respective activities,” said Asep.

“We will announce it then. Anyway, the progress is very good,” he added.

For information, this hajj quota corruption case relates to the distribution of an additional 20,000 hajj pilgrims for the 2024 hajj quota during Yaqut Cholil Qoumas’s tenure as Minister of Religious Affairs. The additional quota was intended to reduce the waiting list or waiting period for regular Indonesian hajj pilgrims, which can reach 20 years or more.

Before the additional quota, Indonesia received a hajj quota of 221,000 pilgrims in 2024. After the addition, the total Indonesian hajj quota for 2024 became 241,000. The root of the problem began when the additional quota was divided equally, with 10,000 for regular hajj and 10,000 for special hajj.

However, the Hajj Law stipulates that the special hajj quota is only 8 percent of Indonesia’s total hajj quota. In the end, Indonesia used 213,320 slots for regular hajj pilgrims and 27,680 for special hajj pilgrims in 2024.

The KPK stated that the policy during Yaqut’s era caused 8,400 regular hajj pilgrims who had been queuing for more than 14 years and should have been able to depart after the additional quota in 2024 to fail to depart.

The results of the KPK’s investigation then designated Yaqut and his former special staff, Ishfah Abidal Aziz (IAA) alias Gus Alex, as suspects. The KPK affirmed that it has gathered a series of evidence from the determination of those suspects.
