KPK Opens Possibility to Charge Silmy Karim and Others with Money Laundering
Acting KPK Director of Investigation Achmad Taufik Husein stated that the anti-graft body will likely develop the case into a money laundering (TPPU) offence, citing numerous assets discovered during the probe. “We will certainly develop this towards TPPU. As colleagues may know, there were several means of transportation, two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles, and even a Brompton bicycle,” Taufik said during a press conference at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in South Jakarta on Thursday (4/6/2026). He said investigators will trace the origin of the funds used to purchase these assets. According to Taufik, if the assets are proven to have been bought using proceeds from corruption, the elements of money laundering will be met. “We will certainly trace their acquisition and whether they involved laundering through nominee accounts used to purchase assets. That already fulfils the elements of money laundering,” he said. Previously, the KPK revealed the role of Silmy Karim in an alleged extortion case related to residence permits for foreign nationals at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections during the 2022-2026 period. The KPK stated that Silmy Karim allegedly committed extortion by ‘demanding a cut’ from the processing of foreign nationals’ residence permits. KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto disclosed this during a press conference on Thursday (4/6/2026). Setyo said the act was committed by Silmy Karim while serving as Director General of Immigration in 2023-2024. Silmy is alleged to have ‘demanded a cut’ from the processing of residence permits through the Director of Stay Permits at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Jaya Saputra, who is currently the Head of the West Java Immigration Regional Office. “Brother SK, as Deputy Minister of Immigration and Corrections for 2025-2026, who at the time served as Director General of Immigration for 2023-2024, allegedly committed extortion by ‘demanding a cut’ from the processing of residence permits for foreign nationals through Brother JS as Director of Stay Permits,” said Setyo.
