KPK Opens Possibility of Examining Sukoharjo Regent's Husband
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has opened the possibility of questioning Wardoyo Wijaya, husband of Sukoharjo Regent Etik Suryani and regent for two terms, 2010-2015 and 2016-2021.
Asep Guntur Rahayu, Deputy for Enforcement and Execution at the KPK, said the commission is still examining Wardoyo’s connection to the extortion case allegedly committed by his wife.
“Will her husband be questioned? That is what we are currently looking into,” Asep said at a press conference at the KPK’s Red and White Building in Jakarta on Saturday (11/7).
Nevertheless, Asep added, Wardoyo’s health condition is currently declining.
“But of course, we will still request his testimony if the results of the medical examination later allow us to do so,” Asep added.
He stressed that the KPK will ensure Wardoyo is fit to be questioned, provided he is medically healthy.
“But in principle, anyone involved in these corruption acts will certainly be asked to give testimony. This will naturally help complete the picture or the case construction we are building,” he said.
The KPK arrested Etik over alleged extortion within the Sukoharjo Regency administration. The alleged extortion is also believed to have occurred during Wardoyo’s time in office.
In this case, Asep said, Etik issued decrees on the Receipt and Amount of Incentive Payments for Local Tax Collection, and a Regent’s Decree on the Recipients and Amount of Incentive Payments for Local Levy Collection, at the Sukoharjo Regency Regional Finance and Asset Management Agency (BPKAD) for 2026.
“Both regental decrees are suspected of being used by ETS as instruments to carry out extortion in the form of ‘collection fee deposits’ within the Sukoharjo BPKAD,” Asep revealed.
These demands, Asep continued, are suspected of continuing a tradition established by the previous regent, who is also Etik’s husband.
“With coded commands such as ‘tambahan upah pungut kae ono tho?’ (is there an additional collection fee?); ‘kowe mrene kan ora bayar’ (you come here without paying); ‘padakno karo bapak’ (match it with bapak),” Asep disclosed.
“The meaning is that the amount deposited should be adjusted to the deposits made during the previous regent’s tenure,” he added.
During his time as regent, Wardoyo also instructed BPKAD officials with the command ‘wes dilantik ojo mendeleng wae’ (you have been inaugurated, don’t just stay silent). That phrase referred to deposits made by employees to the regent at the time.
