KPK Opens Complaint Channel for Alleged Misuse of Disaster Relief Funds
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is tightening oversight of disaster relief distribution by establishing intensive coordination with a number of affected regional governments. This strategic measure is being taken to ensure aid reaches the right recipients and to prevent potential misuse by irresponsible parties.
KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto explained that the oversight will be led by the Deputy for Coordination and Supervision (Korsup). This deputy is tasked with direct interaction with regional governments as well as collaborating with other relevant work units within the KPK involved in aid handling.
“Of course we are working together with the Korsup Deputy, who directly interacts with regional governments, and even with other deputies,” said Setyo during a press briefing at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in South Jakarta on Monday (17/8).
In addition to internal oversight, the KPK is also opening the widest possible space for the public to report any indications of misuse in aid distribution. Setyo stressed that public participation is crucial in providing initial information regarding aid that does not reach the communities in need.
Every incoming report will undergo a thorough review and assessment process. This is done to determine the next legal steps in accordance with the authority of the anti-corruption body, particularly those involving state officials and law enforcement personnel.
“After that, there will be a review, assessment, and other actions to follow up. The KPK’s authority remains with state officials and law enforcement personnel, and only then with other parties such as the private sector,” he added.
Setyo affirmed that oversight of disaster relief is not new for the KPK. He demanded full transparency at every stage, from assignments at the central government level, ministries and agencies, to execution at the regional government level.
This effort is expected to close corruption loopholes amid emergency situations, so that the rights of disaster-affected communities can be fully met without any deductions or irregularities in distribution.
