KPK on Proposal for Political Party Leaders' Term Limits: Parties Already Involved!
Jakarta – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) claims to have involved political parties before proposing a limit of two terms for the general chairmen of political parties.
“In the process of this study, the KPK has also involved political parties to obtain views and objective facts from the perspective of colleagues in political parties,” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to reporters at the KPK’s Red and White Building on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
Budi assured that the proposal for limiting the terms of general chairmen of political parties does not come from just one or two parties.
“Thus, it does not only come from one or two perspectives, but in conducting the study, we have also included parties from political parties so they can provide points that are objectively experienced and felt in the processes they go through in those political parties,” he stated.
Budi continued that the results of the study on political governance, including the proposal to limit the terms of general chairmen of political parties, will be conveyed by the KPK to each political party in Indonesia.
“The KPK’s responsibility is indeed to convey every study to the relevant stakeholders,” Budi concluded.
Previously reported, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has proposed that the terms of general chairmen of political parties be limited to a maximum of two periods.
The proposal was submitted by the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate in its study on political party governance. In the study, the KPK stated that there is no standard integrated cadre system.
The KPK’s Monitoring Directorate assessed that terms, especially for general chairmen of political parties, must be limited to a maximum of two periods.
“To ensure the implementation of cadre development, regulation of the leadership limit for general chairmen of parties to a maximum of two periods of tenure is needed,” stated the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate, quoted on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
In addition, the KPK is also urging the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) to prepare standardisation of integrated political party cadre reporting systems with banpol.
“Urging political parties to implement Constitutional Court Decision Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024 on minimum thresholds for regional elections through candidate recruitment based on cadre development,” he explained.
The KPK also assessed that there needs to be an addition to the revision of Article 29 of Law Number 2 of 2011 regarding political party membership in Article 29 Paragraph (1) letter a, adding that political party members consist of young, intermediate, and senior members.
