KPK Investigates Origin of 55 kg Platinum Found During Langkat Regent's Arrest

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating the origin of 55 kilograms of platinum found in the car of Langkat Regent Syah Afandin, also known as Ondim, during a recent sting operation. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding the possession of the metal. “Investigators will certainly study the origin of the platinum and why it was in the regent’s possession,” Budi told reporters on Monday (6/7/2026). He added that the KPK will request experts to verify the authenticity of the platinum, noting that confirmation is crucial for the investigation process. Platinum is a metal rarely encountered in corruption cases, with the KPK more commonly seizing gold. Syah Afandin was previously named a suspect in a bribery case involving project fees within the Langkat Regency Government. He was caught in the sting operation on Thursday (2/7) along with Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu’arif, a member of his 2024 election campaign team. The KPK alleges that Ondim received Rp 800 million from Yaqub up to April 2026. In June 2026, Ondim is suspected of requesting an additional Rp 300 million, though Yaqub reportedly could only provide Rp 100 million.
