KPK Investigates Flow of Rp7.1 Billion Following Hajj Corruption Trial Evidence
The Corruption Eradability Commission (KPK) is examining trial facts in the alleged Hajj quota corruption case involving US$400,000 (approximately Rp7,101,200,000) intended for the Special Committee on the Hajj Inquiry of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI). The funds were reportedly given to an intermediary who is a friend of the Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency, Nusron Wahid.
“The KPK Public Prosecutor will certainly examine and analyse every statement that emerges during the trial,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists in Jakarta on Wednesday (2/9).
Budi added that every fact presented in the Hajj quota case trial is crucial for the evidentiary process, as it will reveal the full construction of the case.
The KPK commenced the investigation into the alleged Indonesian Hajj quota corruption for the 2023-2024 period on 9 August 2025. As of 30 March 2026, the KPK has named four suspects in the case: former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, his former special staff member Ishfah Abidal Aziz (alias Gus Alex), Maktour Operational Director Ismail Adham, and the former General Chairman of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Tour Travel Union, Asrul Aziz Taba.
On 11 August 2026, the four suspects began their trial as defendants. They are accused of causing state losses amounting to up to Rp622.09 billion. During a follow-up hearing on 18 August 2026, the trial revealed the handover of US$400,000 to an individual named Erik, acting as an intermediary for Zainal Abidin. Zainal is identified as a friend of the 2024 DPR Hajj Special Committee Chairman, Nusron Wahid.
During the proceedings, Gus Alex questioned Syaiful Bahri, a former staff member of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), regarding a entrusted sum of US$406,000 from Asrul Aziz.
It was subsequently discovered that only US$301,000 remained of that amount as some had been used. Consequently, Gus Alex added US$100,000 to the sum held by Syaiful Bahri.
Furthermore, Gus Alex instructed Syaiful Bahri to meet Erik and deliver the US$400,000. Gus Alex requested Syaiful Bahri to carry out this task to fulfil the request of Zainal Abidin, acting as a friend of Nusron Wahid.
