Investigators from the KPK have explained the reasons behind temporarily placing former Minister of Religious Affairs (Menag) for the 2020-2024 period, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ), under house arrest during Eid 2026, requiring him to leave the detention centre. The KPK claims this was part of the strategy for handling the hajj quota case implicating Gus Yaqut.

The former general chairman of GP Ansor is now recorded as having returned to the KPK Detention Centre on Tuesday (24/3/2026) afternoon WIB. Yaqut held house arrest status from 19-23 March. Before returning to the KPK Detention Centre, Gus Yaqut underwent a health check.

“We, during the detention, so at the time of initial detention, health checks are always conducted at the time of detention,” said Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the KPK, Inspector General Asep Guntur Rahayu, to reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday (24/3/2026).

Based on that examination, the KPK learned that Gus Yaqut suffers from GERD and asthma. This reason was part of the considerations that allowed Gus Yaqut to receive house arrest status.

“Hmm, there are many, besides the health condition, the results just now, we inform that one of the results from the health assessment is that the person suffers from acute GERD, and has undergone endoscopy and colonoscopy. I’m not too familiar with that medical term, you can check with colleagues later. Also, the person suffers from asthma,” said Asep.

He assured that the special treatment for Gus Yaqut is part of the KPK’s strategy. Asep believes this step can facilitate the KPK in investigating the hajj quota case at the Ministry of Religious Affairs to its roots.

“So of course this becomes one of them, just one condition, besides there are other needs in this case strategy so that it can run smoothly,” said Asep.

In addition, said Asep, the KPK has scheduled a press conference regarding the progress of the hajj quota case on Wednesday (25/3/2026). “Just wait for tomorrow’s progress, and of course we will hold another press conference tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile, Asep expressed thanks to all Indonesian people who have supported the handling of the hajj quota case to date. On 11 August 2025, the KPK announced the initial calculation of state losses in the case exceeding Rp 1 trillion, and prevented three people from travelling abroad for the next six months.

Those prevented are former Gus Yaqut, Ishfah Abidal Aziz alias Gus Alex as Yaqut’s special staff, and Fuad Hasan Masyhur as the owner of the Maktour hajj organiser bureau. On 9 January 2026, the KPK announced that two of the three prevented individuals became suspects in the alleged hajj quota corruption case, namely Yaqut and Gus Alex.

However, Yaqut filed a pre-trial application against the suspect determination to the South Jakarta District Court on 10 February 2026, registered under case number 19/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL.
