KPK Focuses on Summoning Hajj Bureaus After Naming New Suspects in Hajj Case
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has stated that it is currently focusing on summoning Hajj service providers after naming two new suspects in the alleged corruption case involving the Hajj quota a few days ago.
“In the investigation of this case, investigators are still focusing on summoning the PIHK (providers of special Hajj worship) or Hajj service bureaus. In particular, the investigators’ focus is on how to optimise asset recovery (recovery of state financial losses),” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Budi explained that investigators are focusing on this because the state financial losses, based on calculations by the Financial Audit Board (BPK) of Indonesia, amount to Rp622 billion, so they must be pursued to ensure optimal recovery.
“It can be optimal, from where? Of course, from these PIHK who then gained profits from the process or mechanism of distributing Hajj worship quotas that were allegedly done in unlawful ways,” he said.
Meanwhile, he stated that the KPK assures the investigation into the Hajj quota case continues to progress positively.
Previously, on 9 August 2025, the KPK began investigating the alleged corruption related to Indonesia’s Hajj quota for 2023–2024.
On 9 January 2026, the KPK announced former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and Ishfah Abidal Aziz alias Gus Alex, as Yaqut’s special staff, as suspects in the case.
Meanwhile, Fuad Hasan Masyhur, owner of the Hajj service bureau Maktour, was not named as a suspect, although he was once banned from leaving the country.
On 27 February 2026, the KPK announced that it had received an audit from the Financial Audit Board (BPK) of Indonesia regarding state financial losses due to the Hajj quota case.
Then, on 4 March 2026, the KPK announced that state financial losses due to the case amounted to Rp622 billion.
On 12 March 2026, the KPK detained Yaqut Cholil at the KPK’s Red and White Building Branch State Detention House.
Then, on 17 March 2026, the KPK detained Gus Alex at the KPK’s Anti-Corruption Education Centre Branch Detention House.
On the same date, Yaqut Cholil’s family requested the KPK to allow the former Minister of Religious Affairs to be under house arrest. The KPK then granted the request, and Yaqut has been under house arrest since 19 March 2026.
On 23 March 2026, the KPK announced that it was processing the transfer of Yaqut Cholil’s detention from house arrest back to detention house. On 24 March 2026, Yaqut officially became a detainee at the KPK Detention House.
The KPK announced two new suspects in the case on 30 March 2026. They are Ismail Adham, Operational Director of Maktour, and Asrul Aziz Taba, Chairman General of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Tour Travel Union (Kesthuri).
