KPK Faces Pretrial Motion from Hajj Quota Corruption Suspect, Asserts Investigation Was Lawful
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is prepared to face a pretrial motion filed by Asrul Azis Taba (ASR), the Chairman of the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Tour Travel Association (Kesthuri) and a suspect in a hajj quota corruption case. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that the commission respects the legal efforts undertaken by the suspect in filing the pretrial motion. However, he asserted that the entire investigation process, including the search efforts, was conducted based on the rules. “(The investigation and search process) was carried out professionally, based on statutory provisions, and fulfilled both material and formal aspects as regulated in criminal procedural law,” he said on Monday, 20 July 2026. Budi explained that the search conducted by the KPK was part of the investigation carried out by investigators to obtain and secure evidence to clarify an alleged criminal act. “Therefore, every such action is carried out based on investigative needs, accompanied by a valid legal basis, and within the applicable corridor of accountability and supervision,” Budi stated. He therefore revealed that the KPK will face the pretrial process by respecting the authority of the panel of judges to examine the legality aspects of the investigators’ actions. “All arguments and evidence forming the basis for the search action will be presented openly in the trial,” he concluded. Previously, Kesthuri Chairman Asrul Azis Taba filed another pretrial motion regarding a search conducted by the KPK. “Case classification: the legality of the forced effort to conduct a search,” was written on the South Jakarta District Court Case Tracking Information System page. The motion was filed on Friday, 17 July 2026, with case registration number 121/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL. The first hearing is scheduled for Friday, 24 July 2026.
