KPK Discovers 55 kg of Platinum in Langkat Regent's Car, Estimated Value Reaches IDR 40 Billion
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed a shocking discovery during a sting operation (OTT) against Langkat Regent Syah Afandin, also known as Ondim. Investigators found 55 kilograms of precious metal, suspected to be platinum, inside a car belonging to Syah Afandin. The discovery is now a key focus of the KPK’s investigation. In addition to tracing the origin of the precious metal, investigators will also verify the authenticity of the evidence by involving parties with competence in the field of precious metals. Acting Director of KPK Investigations Achmad Taufik Husein stated the precious metal was found when the team conducted the OTT on Thursday, 2 July 2026. ‘The team also found 55 pieces of platinum metal with a total weight of approximately 55 kilograms in SAF’s car,’ Taufik said during a press conference on Friday, 3 July 2026. Based on initial inquiries, the KPK estimates each piece of the metal has a value of around IDR 900 million. With a total of 55 pieces, the overall value of the discovered precious metal is estimated to reach approximately IDR 40 billion. ‘The initial assumption is that it has value, because if we browse common websites, it is valued at around IDR 900 million per piece. It has been checked on the website, so if multiplied by 55 pieces, it is around IDR 40 billion,’ Taufik said. However, the KPK emphasised that this value is still an initial estimate. Investigators will conduct further analysis to ascertain the true value of the discovered evidence. In addition to calculating its economic value, investigators will also seek clarification from Syah Afandin regarding the origin of the precious metal. The KPK will also collaborate with experts from competent institutions to determine whether the found metal is genuine platinum. ‘Regarding its authenticity, we will also ask experts, perhaps from Antam or Pegadaian, who indeed have the qualifications to know whether the item is genuine or not,’ Taufik explained. The results of this examination will later form part of the investigation process for the case being handled by the KPK.
