KPK Detains Two Suspects in Hajj Quota Corruption Case: Ismail Adham and Asrul Azis
The Corruption Eradability Commission (KPK) has detained two suspects in an alleged Hajj quota corruption case, identified as Ismail Adham (ISM) and Asrul Azis Taba (ASR).
“Two suspects have been detained: ISM, the Operational Director of PT Makassar Toraja (Maktour), and ASR, the Commissioner of PT Raudah Eksati Utama and former General Chairman of Kesthuri (the Indonesian Hajj and Umrah Tour Travel Association),” stated the Acting Director of Investigation at the KPK, Achmad Taufik Husein, at the KPK Red and White Building in Jakarta on Monday.
Taufik noted that the suspects, Ismail and Asrul, will be held in custody for the initial 20-day period, spanning from 8 June to 27 June 2026. The detention is being carried out at the Detention Centre at the KPK Red and White Building.
Furthermore, he explained that the suspects are being detained for alleged violations of Article 2 paragraph (1) and/or Article 3 of Law Number 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Corruption Crimes, as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001, in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) 1° of the old Criminal Code (KUHP).
On 9 January 2026, the KPK named the former Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, and his special staff, Ishfah Abidal Aziz (also known as Gus Alex), as suspects. Meanwhile, Fuad Hasan Masyhur, the owner of the Maktour Hajj travel agency, has not been named a suspect, despite previously being subject to an overseas travel ban.
The KPK subsequently received audit results from the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK) on 27 February 2026, which indicated that state losses in this case have reached Rp622 billion.
On 12 March 2026, the KPK detained Yaqut, followed by the detention of Ishfah on 17 March 2026. While the KPK initially transitioned Yaqut’s status to house arrest on 19 March 2026 following a request from his family, he was returned to the KPK detention centre on 24 March 2026. On 30 March 2026, the KPK officially named the two new suspects: Maktour’s Operational Director, Ismail Adham, and the former General Chairman of Kesthuri, Asrul Aziz Taba.
