Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has designated a new suspect in the extortion case involving suspended Riau Governor Abdul Wahid. The KPK has designated Abdul Wahid’s aide, Marjani (MJN), as a suspect.

“Today the KPK called the relevant parties in their capacity as witnesses for the new suspect, Marjani, who is the Aide de Camp or personal assistant to the Riau Governor,” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists on Monday, 9 March 2026.

Budi stated that the designation of the new suspect confirms that the investigation into the case will continue. However, details regarding when the suspect was formally designated and the specific articles being charged will be provided later.

“The designation of this new suspect confirms that the investigation into the case will continue. We will continue to examine additional evidence to gain deeper and broader understanding,” he said.

“Given that arrests in the act often serve as an entry point for the KPK to determine whether similar practices have occurred in other sectors in the Riau region,” he added.

The KPK has completed the investigation into Abdul Wahid in the alleged extortion case involving his subordinates at the Riau Provincial Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency. Abdul Wahid will soon be tried.

“Today, Monday (2 March), the investigation into the alleged corruption offence related to extortion within the Riau Provincial Government has been declared complete or designated as P21, and has been transferred to the prosecution stage,” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists on Monday, 2 March.

The case originated from the arrest in the act of Riau Governor Abdul Wahid in early November 2025. The case against Abdul Wahid relates to alleged fee demands by Abdul Wahid from his subordinates at the Riau Provincial Public Works Agency.

The KPK has designated three suspects related to the extortion case within the Riau Provincial Government. The three suspects are:

  1. Riau Governor Abdul Wahid

  2. Head of the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, Muhammad Arief Setiawan

  3. Expert Staff to the Riau Governor, Dani M Nursalam

The KPK suspects that Abdul Wahid threatened his subordinates if they failed to remit money known as “henchman quota” totalling approximately IDR 7 billion. There were at least three remittances of such quota fees in June, August, and November 2025.
