The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has formally designated Rejang Lebong Regent Muhammad Fikri Thobari as a suspect in an alleged corruption case. In addition to the regent, the anti-corruption agency has designated four others as suspects following a series of intensive investigations.

KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed the news at the Red and White Building of the KPK in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, 10 March. According to him, this decision was made after the KPK’s investigation team and leadership conducted a case exposure session on Tuesday afternoon.

“The case exposure was conducted at the leadership level this afternoon, and legal status decisions were made for the parties who were secured. The KPK has designated five suspects in this closed investigation,” said Budi, as reported by Antara on 10 March.

Budi clarified that of the five individuals designated as suspects, two are strongly suspected to be bribery recipients, whilst the other three are suspected bribery providers. Regarding the full identities and detailed case construction, the KPK will announce this officially shortly.

“For details of the parties designated as suspects, we will announce them in full at a press conference tomorrow, 11 March,” he added.

Previously, on Monday, 9 March, the KPK conducted a Sting Operation (OTT) in the Bengkulu region that resulted in the detention of Rejang Lebong Regent Muhammad Fikri Thobari, Deputy Regent Hendri, and 11 others. This KPK operation is believed to be related to bribery practices involving infrastructure projects within the Rejang Lebong Regency Government.

On Tuesday, 10 March, those detained in the sting operation, including the Regent and Deputy Regent who are members of the PAN party, were transported to Jakarta to undergo intensive questioning at KPK headquarters before their legal status was elevated to the investigation stage.

The KPK seized hundreds of millions of rupiah during the sting operation targeting Rejang Lebong Regent Muhammad Fikri Thobari.
