The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) conducted a sting operation in Cilacap Regency, Central Java, on Friday, 13 March. In the operation, the anti-corruption agency’s enforcement team arrested Cilacap Regent Syamsul Auliya Rachman.
KPK Deputy Chairman Fitroh Rohcahyanto confirmed the enforcement operation, which netted the top official in Cilacap Regency. “It is correct that the Cilacap Regent has been arrested,” said Fitroh Rohcahyanto to Metrotvnews.com on Friday, 13 March.
In addition to securing the regent, Fitroh stated that the field team also detained several other individuals suspected of involvement in the case. However, the anti-corruption agency has not yet detailed the identities or positions of the other individuals apprehended.
Fitroh indicated that several other people besides Syamsul were arrested, though their identities could not be disclosed at that time. As of now, all detained individuals remain under intensive questioning by the KPK task force. The questioning is being conducted to investigate allegations of corruption within Cilacap Regency administration.
Under Indonesian Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), the KPK has 1 x 24 hours from the sting operation to determine the legal status of those apprehended. The legal status of the individuals involved is expected to be announced through an official press conference at KPK headquarters in Jakarta.
