KPK Calls Unsoed Rector Case a Serious Threat to Indonesia's Future
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has stated that corruption cases emerging in the education sector pose a serious threat to Indonesia’s future. The KPK said such corruption is not merely a legal matter.
This was the KPK’s response after Universitas Soedirman (Unsoed) Rector Akhmad Sodiq became entangled in a case of alleged extortion and gratuities related to the admission of new students through the independent pathway. Sodiq was caught in a KPK sting operation (OTT) in connection with the case.
“Corruption occurring in the education sector is not merely a violation of the law, but a serious threat to academic tradition and Indonesia’s future,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo in a statement on Monday (24/8/2026).
The KPK stated that corruption in education not only harms the state but also the nation’s generation, as they are deprived of their right to quality, fair and integrity-based education. Therefore, the KPK will intensify its efforts to eradicate corruption in the education sector.
“Universities are the bastion of the nation’s integrity. Therefore, eradicating corruption on campus cannot be achieved through enforcement alone, but must be strengthened with prevention, anti-corruption education, and active public participation,” Budi said.
The KPK also recognises that campuses play a vital role in developing knowledge, shaping character, and producing future leaders. The KPK hopes that a preventive approach can improve university governance to become transparent, accountable, and free from conflicts of interest.
“We hope that the problems revealed in the sting operation at Unsoed serve as a wake-up call for all of us to re-examine our commitments and respond with real, comprehensive and more serious corrective measures,” Budi said.
Previously, the KPK announced Akhmad Sodiq as a suspect in an alleged corruption case related to the new student admission process at Unsoed. In this case, Sodiq sought to profit from the admission of new students through the independent pathway.
In carrying out his actions, Sodiq was “assisted” by Vice Rector III Norman Arie Prayogo, Head of Academic Affairs Eko Sumanto, and three private parties, namely Dian Mulia Wardhana, Adhi Wiharto, and Mulyono, who is Akhmad Sodiq’s nephew.
The suspects are currently detained for the first 20 days from 21 August to 9 September 2026 at the KPK detention centre in the Merah Putih building. They are alleged to have violated provisions in the Corruption Eradication Law, particularly Article 12 letter e or Article 12B, in conjunction with the latest Criminal Code (KUHP).
