The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has also arrested one civil servant (ASN) from the Langkat Regency Government and five private individuals in connection with a sting operation (OTT) targeting Langkat Regent Syah Afandin on Thursday (2/7). The operation was conducted across three locations: Langkat, Binjai, and Medan. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated at the Merah Putih Building in Jakarta on Friday (3/7) that the investigation team secured a total of seven people during the incident. ‘One is a state official, one is a civil servant in Langkat Regency, and the other five are private parties,’ he said, confirming that one of the seven detained was the Langkat regent. Budi added that the regent would be transported to Jakarta later that day for further examination. During the covert operation, the KPK also found evidence of alleged criminal activity in the form of hundreds of millions of rupiah in cash, which was part of a project fee given by a private party to the regent. ‘This case is suspected to be related to bribery involving projects in the Education Agency and the Public Housing and Settlement Areas Agency of Langkat Regency,’ Budi stated. He concluded that the investigation would also explore whether there were other receipts or gratuities accepted by the regent or other state officials in the Langkat area.
