KPAI States West Java Has Highest Number of Child Neglect Cases

The Indonesian Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) has revealed that child neglect cases are most prevalent in West Java. This was disclosed by KPAI member Kawiyan during a release of child protection monitoring reports covering January to April 2026.

‘In 2025, we conducted monitoring on child neglect, and the highest numbers were in West Java, due to its large population and extensive territory,’ Kawiyan stated, as quoted from a KPAI YouTube broadcast on Monday.

Kawiyan explained that cases of abandoned infants are often intentional acts by parents driven by various factors. ‘Infant abandonment is intentionally carried out by partners. There are several factors: some couples have a baby but are not officially married, while others are officially married but feel unready to raise a child, leading them to abandon an innocent infant,’ he added.

During the same session, KPAI member Dian Sasmita noted that Jakarta is one of the five provinces in Indonesia with the highest number of complaints regarding child rights violations. ‘The region with the most complaints is DKI Jakarta,’ said Dian.

Following Jakarta, the provinces with the highest numbers include West Java (96 cases), East Java (36 cases), Banten (30 cases), and North Sumatra (23 cases).

Dian further explained that child violence occurs frequently in environments with prolonged interaction, such as homes and schools. ‘Furthermore, the digital environment has also become a space where our children are very vulnerable to becoming victims of violence,’ Dian remarked. Consequently, she reminded that it is the responsibility of all parties to ensure children are protected from all forms of violence.
