KPAI: Several Daycares Are Purely Business-Oriented, Supervision Must Be Tightened
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) has spotlighted the case of violence that occurred at the Little Aresha childcare centre or daycare in Yogyakarta City. This is because cases of violence at daycares are not happening for the first time. KPAI Commissioner Diyah Puspitarini said that her organisation has previously handled several problematic daycares. According to her, the majority of problematic daycares dealt with by KPAI are purely business-oriented. “Several problematic daycares handled by KPAI indeed operate with a pure business orientation, disregarding regulations, let alone establishment permits,” she said on Sunday (26/4/2026). She added that daycares focused solely on profit are also usually negligent towards the surrounding community. As a result, the community typically does not know about the activities in those daycares. “Daycares like this are also usually negligent towards the surrounding community, without permission from community leaders or village officials,” she said. Diyah explained that the establishment of a daycare should have permission from the local education department. Without that, the daycare is not allowed to operate. “According to the rules, establishment must be with permission from the local education department and the city/regency government,” she said.
