JAKARTA - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has requested that the child victim of a stray bullet incident in Gresik, East Java, receive psychological accompaniment and legal protection. “KPAI expresses sympathy and, in accordance with Child Protection Law Article 59A, the legal process must be swift, and the child must receive psychological accompaniment and legal protection,” said KPAI member Diyah Puspitarini on Tuesday (7/4/2026), quoted from Antara. KPAI has received a complaint about this case and will forward it to relevant parties, including the Ministry of Defence. Meanwhile, approximately 2.3 kilometres from the victim’s school, there is a TNI AL firing range where routine shooting exercises were taking place at the time. There are two child victims of the stray bullets, namely DF (14) and RO (15). Following the incident, both were immediately rushed to Siti Khodijah Sepanjang Hospital in East Java for intensive treatment. Victims DF and RO subsequently underwent major surgery to remove the bullets. DF suffered a broken bone in his left palm and had a pin inserted. The Head of Information Service of the Marine Corps (Kadispen Korps Marinir), Colonel (Marine) Rana Karya, stated that his institution is saddened by the incident that befell DF and RO. Based on information gathered by the Marine Corps, the incident began when the students were participating in activities in the school mosque area. On 17 December 2025, DF first felt an impact on his left hand, while RO experienced an impact on the back of his body, causing a wound. After receiving initial treatment at the nearest health facility, both were referred to the hospital for further examination, including X-rays, and then underwent surgery to remove the projectile. At around the same time, the TNI unit received a report from the field, went to the location, coordinated with the school and local community, and ensured that the victims received hospital treatment.
