KPAI: Families of Santri Burn Victims Face Medical Cost Barriers

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has said that the families of two santri (Islamic boarding school students) who were burned in an incident at a pesantren in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), are focusing on their children’s physical recovery. However, the victims’ families are also facing financial constraints in paying for treatment.

“The families are still focused on the victims’ physical recovery, but they are constrained by costs. The information we received is that there are obstacles in using BPJS funds,” said KPAI member Diyah Puspitarini when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/7/2026).

For this reason, KPAI is urging the local health office and BPJS Kesehatan to provide assistance by waiving the recovery costs for the severe burns suffered by the two victims. “KPAI urges the local health office and BPJS to provide fee waivers for the medical treatment of the children who were victims of physical violence. They must receive medical attention and rehabilitation as soon as possible, especially in this case, where the children were burned and suffered permanent disabilities,” said Diyah Puspitarini.

Previously, three santri became victims of a burning allegedly carried out by a senior student at the Pondok Pesantren Rosyidatushaulatiyyah Al Ibrahimy in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), in December 2025. As a result of the tragic incident, one victim died, while the other two suffered severe burns.

The two survivors are currently constrained by the cost of treating their serious injuries. The legal process in the case is still being handled by the Central Lombok Police and the NTB Regional Police. No suspect has yet been named in the case.
