KPAI Condemns Santri Burning Incident in Central Lombok

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has strongly condemned an act of violence at the Rosyidatushaulatiyyah Al Ibrahimy Islamic Boarding School in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. The tragic incident, involving the burning of a santri, resulted in one fatality and left two others seriously injured. “KPAI deeply regrets the occurrence of violence against children within an educational environment,” said KPAI member Diyah Puspitarini in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/7). Diyah urged the local police to process the case firmly and immediately. She stressed that the investigation must be guided by Law Number 35 of 2014 on Child Protection and Law Number 11 of 2012 on the Juvenile Criminal Justice System (SPPA). Regarding the child suspected of being the perpetrator, KPAI asked law enforcement officials to act swiftly but remain within the corridors of the SPPA Law. This step is considered crucial to ensure justice for the victims and legal certainty for all parties involved. The heartbreaking incident was allegedly carried out by a senior santri in December 2025. Besides the one fatality, two other santri are currently struggling to recover from severe burns. However, the two victims are reportedly facing financial constraints in continuing their necessary medical treatment. The legal process is currently being handled by the Central Lombok Police and the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Police. Although the investigation is ongoing, the police have reportedly not yet named a suspect in the burning case. KPAI called on all levels of society to jointly oversee the case until its completion. “KPAI asks all parties to be conducive in safeguarding and overseeing this case together so that similar incidents do not happen again in the future,” concluded Diyah.
