This synergy aims to strengthen the protection system as well as the empowerment of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) based on communities. Palu (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) is strengthening protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) on a village basis. “Protection for PMI cannot begin only when they are already abroad. Protection must start from the village, when the decision to migrate begins to form,” said the Director General of Empowerment at KP2MI, Muh. Fachri, in Palu on Tuesday, during the Multi-Stakeholder Forum Workshop for Donggala Regency 2026. The event is the result of collaboration between KP2MI, the international cooperation agency GIZ, and Lakpesdam PBNU. The activity is part of the government’s strategic efforts to build a PMI protection system from the grassroots, namely the village, by involving various cross-sector stakeholders. Fachri emphasised that PMI protection is a tangible form of the state’s presence in guaranteeing the rights and dignity of Indonesian citizens working abroad. He explained that villages hold a very strategic position as the starting point of the labour migration process. Therefore, the government has introduced the Golden Migrant Village Programme (Edukatif, Maju, Aman, Sejahtera) as part of the national strategy to build a comprehensive protection and empowerment system. The programme is designed to provide direct benefits to PMI and their families. Some benefits generated from the programme include increased literacy on safe migration, assistance for PMI families, strengthening of remittance-based economies, and entrepreneurship development for former PMI. In addition, the forum also serves as a venue for cross-sector consolidation involving local government, non-governmental organisations, and community groups. The aim is to align policies, identify various field challenges, and formulate sustainable collaborative steps. The government, through KP2MI, also urges the public not to be easily tempted by non-procedural job offers that could be detrimental. The public is asked to ensure that all migration processes are carried out legally and in accordance with applicable provisions. In addition, the public is also expected to utilise the various official services provided by the government to ensure safety and welfare while working abroad. Through the forum, the government hopes to strengthen synergy between the centre and regions as well as all stakeholders in creating a better PMI protection ecosystem.
