KP2MI Ready to Optimise Quality Indonesian Migrant Worker Placement to Portugal

Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Mukhtarudin has stated his readiness to optimise the placement of quality Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) in Portugal, which will be strengthened through a related memorandum of understanding (MoU) by the end of this year. “Portugal is one of the countries that has received the President’s attention. Therefore, we must prepare skilled workers as well as possible to be part of the president’s priority programme,” Mukhtarudin said in a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday. During a meeting with Indonesian Ambassador to Portugal Susi Marleny Bachsin at the KP2MI Office in Jakarta on Tuesday, Mukhtarudin noted that Portugal is the latest country to show seriousness in establishing cooperation in the field of PMI placement. “With the MoU in place, we hope the placement of Indonesian migrant workers in Portugal will increase, both in quantity and quality,” Mukhtarudin said. He added that the quality of the PMI placement system and infrastructure, including training facilities and vocational institutions, is already adequate and can support the fulfilment of international labour demand, including from Portugal. Susi revealed that the Portuguese Government, as a step towards signing the MoU, has invited KP2MI to undertake a series of preparatory agendas in Lisbon, such as a meeting with AIPA and meetings with prospective employer companies. Responding to this, Mukhtarudin welcomed the invitation and expressed his readiness, viewing the visit as a momentum to demonstrate Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening PMI placement cooperation with Portugal. Mukhtarudin will also reciprocate by inviting Portuguese partners to visit Indonesia should they wish to inspect training centres or the preparations of PMI before their departure. With the acceleration of the MoU’s completion, he expressed hope that Indonesia and Portugal can soon enter a new chapter of safe and legal migrant worker placement cooperation, while expanding job opportunities for Indonesian citizens.
