KP2MI Engages 11 Ministries to Prepare Competitive Workforce Training

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) is involving 11 ministries to prepare globally competitive human resources training in order to make the SMK Go Global programme a success.

“We want to unite cross-sector steps to train competent prospective Indonesian migrant workers who are ready to be placed in the international labour market,” said Deputy Minister of Migrant Worker Protection Christina Aryani in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She made the statement after chairing a technical coordination meeting on preparations for the SMK Go Global Programme with representatives of 11 ministries that operate vocational institutions, held at the KP2MI office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The 11 ministries include the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and the Ministry of Industry.

Christina affirmed that the SMK Go Global Programme is a government initiative to place 500,000 Indonesian migrant workers in stages between 2026 and 2029.

She said SMK Go Global ensures that every participant who has completed the training can work abroad in line with market needs.

“Therefore, the entire process, from participant selection, training and certification to placement, must be carefully designed according to the expected output,” she said.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Christina also asked that the vocational classes already run by the 11 ministries adjust their curricula to the needs of the global market.

She also requested that the ministries with vocational institutions prepare alumni data and help disseminate information in support of the SMK Go Global Programme.

“Synergy among ministries and institutions is a supporting factor for Indonesia to produce migrant workers who are competent, certified and ready to compete in the international labour market,” said Christina.

This year, the SMK Go Global Programme will run from mid-July to December, targeting 40,000 prospective migrant workers.

The programme’s targets comprise vocational high school (SMK) alumni and members of the general public who already possess basic competencies, so they can be prepared in a short time with additional advanced competencies suited to destination countries, including foreign language proficiency and certification.

Christina said participant targets are set based on real labour market needs verified through the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Computerised System (SiskoP2MI) and Indonesian representatives in more than 130 countries.

To reach the target of 40,000 participants in 2026, around 2,000 training classes with a capacity of 20 participants each will be required.

The programme covers eight priority sectors with 31 job categories, including healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, construction and metal processing.

Beyond ensuring participants’ competency readiness, the Deputy Minister reminded that the biggest challenge remains at the final stage, namely recruitment by employers in destination countries.

“Therefore, the entire coaching process must produce prospective migrant workers who not only meet competency and language standards, but also possess the character and job readiness required by employers abroad,” said Deputy Minister Christina Aryani.
