Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) is once again partnering with universities to involve them in forming a skilled and quality migrant worker ecosystem.

This effort is being carried out through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Minister of P2MI Mukhtarudin and representatives from 10 higher education institutions and the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) at the Ministry of P2MI in Jakarta on Thursday. Additionally, Cooperation Agreements (PKS) were signed with five universities.

“The Ministry of P2MI has just completed signing 11 MoUs and 6 PKS with strategic partners of KP2MI, all from higher education institutions,” said Minister Mukhtarudin.

The Red and White Cabinet Minister explained that the ministry is working to prepare a migrant worker ecosystem, starting from human resource preparation, placement, to empowerment.

In this regard, the role of higher education institutions is crucial in preparing quality human resources that meet the needs of employers abroad.

Preparing skilled workers, Mukhtarudin continued, is in line with President Prabowo’s directives to enhance the protection of migrant workers and improve the preparation of skilled migrant worker resources.

“KP2MI does not have the instruments to produce them; universities do. As regulators and facilitators, we will bridge, link and match the global needs, what competencies are required, what languages are needed with the universities that prepare them,” he explained.

Mukhtarudin added that the signing of MoUs and PKS with universities is an implementation of the MoU with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology aimed at improving the quality of human resources.

“This is already nearly 20 or more universities that have MoUs with us,” he continued.

Rector of Universitas Dr Soetomo, Siti Marwiyah, stated that the implementation of the MoU will involve preparing a Migran Center that will play a role in producing nationals who also have skill certificates.

“We will prepare the curriculum. So our concept is how, as an impactful campus, graduates are not only ready with their knowledge but we will form special programmes outside of lectures, so students not only have a bachelor’s degree but also skill certificates,” she said.

The institutions and universities involved in the MoUs and PKS are the National Professional Certification Agency, Yayasan Maju Tapian Nauli, Institut Bisnis dan Informatika Kosgoro 1957, Universitas Palangka Raya.

In addition, Universitas Insan Cita Indonesia, Universitas Dr Soetomo, Universitas Aisyiyah Palembang, Universitas Sunan Gresik, Universitas Baiturahim, Universitas Islam Negeri Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari Ponorogo, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya.
