The Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) is striving to continuously accelerate the improvement of migrant worker governance by strengthening protection from upstream to downstream, while simultaneously encouraging the global competitiveness of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI).

The Minister of Migrant Worker Protection, Mukhtarudin, stated that his office has formed a special desk in collaboration with the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to handle migrant worker cases.

“Strengthening protection from the upstream stage is a vital focus, particularly to prevent the non-procedural departure of migrant workers and to suppress the risks of human trafficking (TPPO),” Muktarudin said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He stated that the government is committed to ensuring that the public receives accurate information regarding overseas job opportunities through legal recruitment processes and adequate preparation.

“Moving forward, no migrant worker should depart without correct information, without valid documents, and without adequate competence. Prevention must begin at the upstream stage so that issues in destination countries can be minimised,” he added.

Mukhtarudin also emphasised the importance of strengthening migrant worker data to build more effective protection policies. The government requires accurate data regarding the location, profile, competence, and needs of migrant workers so that services and protection interventions can be carried out more swiftly and precisely.

“For us, the success of migrant worker protection is not only achieved when they are successfully placed abroad, but when they work safely, receive their rights, prosper with their families, and have a better future upon returning to Indonesia,” he said.

To increase the competitiveness of Indonesian workers in the global labour market, KP2MI is gradually reducing the dominance of low-skilled migrant workers and increasing the number of mid-to-high skilled workers. This is being achieved, among other means, through the ‘SMK Go Global’ programme, which provides vocational strengthening, foreign language proficiency, international certification, and the enhancement of work ethics.
