Kowani Launches Campaign to Preserve History and Empower Women Through Film

The Indonesian Women’s Congress (Kowani) used a group viewing of the film ‘Jangan Buang Ibu’ as part of the lead-up to its 100th anniversary celebrations. The event, held at Plaza Senayan XXI in Jakarta on Wednesday, aimed to promote the preservation of the history of Indonesian women’s struggles while reinforcing the value of compassion within the family. Kowani Chairwoman for the 2024–2029 period, Nannie Hadi Tjahjanto, emphasised that the journey towards the organisation’s centenary is not merely ceremonial. It is a strategic step to safeguard historical heritage and strengthen women’s contributions to national development. One of Kowani’s main focuses is the ‘Kowani Goes to UNESCO Memory of the World’ programme, which seeks to collect, document, and preserve historical archives recording the role of Indonesian women from the struggle era to modern times. ‘We want current and future generations to know that Indonesian women have played a major role in the nation’s journey. This history must be protected so it is not lost to time,’ she said. She also invited the public who possess documents, photos, or letters related to the Indonesian Women’s Congress to participate in the documentation process. The selection of the film ‘Jangan Buang Ibu’, produced by Leo Pictures, was considered fitting as it highlights devotion to parents and the resilience of a female figure. The character Bu Resti in the film serves as a symbol of a mother’s strength in building generations. ‘Women are the inheritors of the nation’s character. Through this film, we want to foster public awareness of the important role of women in family and social life,’ Nannie added. The activity also coincided with the 80th Anniversary of Bhayangkara Day. Nannie, the daughter of a Brimob member, expressed deep appreciation to the Indonesian National Police. In line with the spirit of public protection, Kowani introduced a self-defence programme for women supported by Sensei Puspa Meonk from PB FORKI. The programme is designed so that simple techniques can be mastered even by women with no martial arts background, to boost their confidence in facing dangerous situations. Concluding the event, Nannie stressed the importance of leadership regeneration by involving young women. ‘The spirit of Kowani’s 100th anniversary is a spirit of transformation. With cross-sector collaboration, we are optimistic that Indonesian women will increasingly contribute to inclusive and just national progress,’ she concluded.
