Kota Kasablanka Mall Fencing Dismantled Following Scrutiny from Pramono Anung
The installation of high fences at several malls in the capital, including Kota Kasablanka (Kokas) in South Jakarta, has come under scrutiny. Attention from Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has resulted in the dismantling of the fences at the shopping centre.
Pramono assessed that the excessive installation of fences creates an impression that Jakarta is unsafe. “I have been closely monitoring the installation of fences in several locations that have become very high. Personally, as the Governor of Jakarta, I certainly desire that Jakarta remains safe and comfortable,” Pramuna stated in Central Jakarta on Saturday (1/8/2026).
Pramono noted that business operators, mall managers, property owners, and office administrators do not need to install excessive fencing, as such measures can trigger negative perceptions of the city. “This includes mall owners, property, and offices; there is no need to install excessive fences. I will immediately coordinate to regularise this,” he said.
Pramono emphasised that high fences must not form an image that Jakarta is in an unsafe condition. According to him, the current situation in Jakarta is conducive. “We must not let this create an image that Jakarta is not doing well. As Governor, and through my coordination with security forces and law enforcement across various sectors, I am confident that Jakarta is perfectly safe,” he added.
Fences Dismantled
The high fences at Kokas mall are no longer visible, as the previously installed structures have been dismantled. Observations at the location on Sunday (2/8/2026) showed that the iron fencing previously placed at the front of the mall has been removed, and the front area has returned to its original state. Traces of the fence post foundations remain visible, while visitors continue to frequent the mall as usual.
The founder of Pakuwon Group, Alexander Tedja, also confirmed that the fences installed at Kokas would be dismantled shortly. He stated that the installation was a decision made by local management without direction from shareholders or the head office. “It was a local management policy and will be dismantled immediately,” he said in a written statement.
Witness Accounts
Local traders near Kokas, such as Hamdan, noted that the fence was still visible on Saturday night around 10:00 PM WIB, but was gone by the following morning. “I saw it last night when returning from trading, but when I left this morning, it was gone,” Hamdan said.
Another resident, Zaidin Santoso, shared a similar account, stating the fence was still standing at 11:00 PM. He noted that the fence had been in place for a week and expressed that the mall looked better without the high barrier. “Usually, there is no fence and it looks better. Perhaps the installation was due to certain issues seen on social media,” he remarked.
