Koster to Develop Gerokgak, Buleleng into Tourism Economic Hub

Bali Governor Wayan Koster is set to develop Gerokgak District in Buleleng into a centre for economic growth and a tourism economic zone. The development is intended to drive economic growth in western Buleleng.

‘A centre for economic growth and a tourism economic zone will be built in Gerokgak District so that the economy in Gerokgak can grow,’ Koster said while opening the Buleleng Festival (Bulfest) 2026 on Tuesday (18/8/2026).

Koster is optimistic that the development of the economic growth centre and tourism economic zone in Gerokgak can begin before his term as Bali Governor ends on 20 February 2030.

‘Astungkara, this will proceed smoothly before I end my term as Governor on 20 February 2030,’ Koster said.

The development, Koster explained, is part of structuring Buleleng’s potential based on the natural characteristics and strengths of each area. According to him, the potential of eastern and western Buleleng has different characteristics.

Koster assessed that eastern Buleleng, such as Sawan and Kubutambahan Districts, is more appropriately developed as a cultural and historical heritage area. Meanwhile, western Buleleng is considered to have stronger potential for economic development.

‘Apparently Buleleng, from west to east, has different natural fortunes,’ said the man from Sembiran Village, Gerokgak District, Buleleng.

‘The eastern part, Sawan, Kubutambahan and others, should become a cultural and historical heritage area. The western part’s fortune is the economy. So there it is suitable for economic development,’ Koster added.

According to Koster, the division of development directions is part of Buleleng’s natural character that must be utilised consistently. He stressed that development in each area must be aligned with its potential and must not contradict the character of the region.

‘Buleleng has truly been arranged in such a way by nature. So it must be implemented consistently and must not be violated,’ Koster asserted.

Buleleng Regent Nyoman Sutjidra said the development of a special economic zone in western Buleleng is a central government programme. The Buleleng Regency Government, he said, will provide support for the programme as it is deemed capable of improving community welfare.

‘The Special Economic Zone in West Buleleng is a programme of the central government. Because this is a central programme to improve the welfare of the Buleleng community, the regional government certainly provides full support,’ Sutjidra said.
