Koster: Bung Karno Month Serves as Spiritual Space to Preserve National Memory

Bali Governor Wayan Koster opened the 8th Bung Karno Month under the theme ‘Kawya Atma Kerthi’ at the Art Center in Denpasar on Monday, 1 June 2026. In his speech, Koster stated that the Bung Karno Month serves as a spiritual space to nurture the collective memory of the Indonesian nation. “Bung Karno Month is a spiritual space to preserve the nation’s collective memory. Bung Karno did not merely leave behind independence but also a spirit—a spirit that dares to dream big, think beyond its time, and act for the people’s interests,” Koster said.

According to him, the Bung Karno Month is not merely a ceremonial commemoration but an ideological and cultural momentum to reignite the struggle spirit of the Proclaimer in collective consciousness.

“History records that his struggle was forged under pressure, imprisonment, and exile. Yet, it was from these constraints that grand ideas for an independent Indonesia—a sovereign, self-reliant nation with cultural personality—emerged,” stated the Bali PDIP Regional DPD Chair.

Koster also noted that Bung Karno held deep admiration for Pulau Dewata (the Island of the Gods). The first Indonesian president viewed Bali as a holistic cultural living space where spiritual values, traditions, and social life harmoniously coexist.

“In his view, Bali reflects the strength of the nation’s identity, where ancestral heritage is preserved while progressing with the times,” he said.

Koster added that this perspective serves as a reminder for society that Bali must not only advance but also steadfastly preserve its identity and noble values as part of Indonesia’s national character.

“For Bali, Bung Karno is not merely a historical figure but a living source of inspiration for the community. His values continue to transform Bali’s development, rooted in local wisdom and future-oriented,” said the Buleleng-born governor.

Therefore, this Bung Karno Month is not merely about remembering his struggle but rekindling the spirit of struggle through concrete action.

“With the spirit championed, this year’s commemoration calls on us to make Bung Karno’s struggle a living consciousness—a driving force that shapes thought, builds character, and guides development,” Koster concluded.
