Korlantas Tightens Traffic Escort Rules

Jakarta – The Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police (Korlantas Polri) has reiterated the standard operating procedures (SOP) for traffic escort duties that must be followed by all personnel in the field. The emphasis is intended to boost officer professionalism while ensuring the comfort of road users. Kasubditwal and Public Order and Safety (PJR) of the Ditgakkum, Korlantas Polri, Kombes Pol. Ruben Verry Takaendengan, outlined eight important points related to the SOP for conducting traffic escorts.

“In recognising the importance of professionalism in the execution of Traffic Police duties, the certification process is very appropriate,” Ruben said in a statement on Wednesday (20 May 2026).

“My hope is that the materials obtained during training can be applied effectively when on duty in the field,” he added.

First, before carrying out an escort, officers must be equipped with a directive or other supporting administrative documents.

Second, when requesting road space or breaking up congestion, officers are not allowed to compel the situation and do not need to carry out aggressive zig-zag movements.

Fourth, the use of rotator lights or strobes on vehicles must not be excessive so as not to disturb other road users.

Fifth, officers are asked to sound the siren only when necessary or in emergencies, and not to use it continuously.

Sixth, personnel are required to perform polite and ethical gestures, such as giving a thumbs-up and saying thank you when giving way to other vehicles.

Seventh, if necessary, officers may use a public address system when delivering lane requests in a courteous manner.

Eighth, all officers must always obey traffic regulations and minimise all forms of road violations.
