Korlantas Reveals Suspect in East Bekasi Train Collision; Taxi as Evidence

The Indonesian National Police’s Traffic Corps (Korlantas) has revealed that a suspect has been named in the case of the long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek train colliding with a KRL at a level crossing near Bekasi Timur Station. A taxi has been seized as evidence in the incident.

“There is a suspect. The taxi as evidence,” said Kombes Pol Mariochristy P.S Siregar, Head of the Laka Sub-Directorate of Ditgakkum Korlantas Polri, at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, 21 May 2026. When asked about the identity of the suspect, Mario declined to reveal it and urged reporters to query the Bekasi Metro Police directly.

“Please go to the Bekasi Metro Police, straight to the Police. Pro justitia,” he added.

Moreover, Mario said the suspect will be charged under Article 310(1) of the Road Traffic and Transportation Act (LLAJ). “There is a suspect, and the evidence will remain seized; he will be brought to trial. Charged under Article 310(1) LLAJ,” he concluded.

Earlier reports have begun to shed light on the tragedy, in which dozens were killed, as the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train collided with the KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. The incident is believed to have been triggered by an initial collision involving an electric taxi, the Green SM, which stopped abruptly on the tracks.

Head of the Pullahjianta Section of the Laka Ditgakkum at Korlantas Polri, Police Commissioner Sandhi Wiedyanoe, explained that the taxi experienced an electrical fault while crossing at the Ampera level crossing. “This accident was caused by a short circuit or an electrical problem in the four-wheeled electric taxi. The fault occurred at the Ampera level crossing, where the railway crossing meets the tracks,” he told reporters, quoted on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.

The situation was dire. The taxi, lingering on the tracks, disrupted the line as other trains from the opposite direction were held at the station. At the same time, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train was approaching and the collision occurred. The impact not only caused fatalities but also disrupted the schedules of other trains on the line.

Meanwhile, the taxi driver survived the incident despite being struck by the train and was immediately detained by Bekasi City Police for further questioning.
