Korlantas Polri Launches Digital Driver's Licence, No Need for Physical Card
Korlantas Polri has officially launched the digital driver’s licence. The new system allows citizens to display their licence via mobile phone, eliminating the need for a physical card. The launch occurred during Korlantas Polri’s National Working Meeting at the Mutiara Djoko Soetono Auditorium in the STIK Polri Complex, Jakarta, on Friday, 22 May. The programme will first undergo trials in several regions before nationwide implementation.
Brigadier General Wibowo, Director of Registration and Identification at Korlantas Polri, explained that the digitisation of SIM is part of the national technological transformation of public services. ‘Through the Digital Korlantas Polri application, citizens can store and display their SIM digitally. The data includes owner identification, SIM number, validity period, and a QR code for on-the-ground verification by officers,’ he said, as quoted on the Korlantas Polri website.
Traffic checks to be based on digital data
In full implementation, drivers undergoing traffic checks will no longer be required to present a physical SIM card. Officers will verify via Korlantas’ central system using the digital SIM stored on the driver’s phone. Physical cards will serve as backup documents to be kept at home.
‘In the future, the validity of SIM will rely on server data rather than the physical card alone. This will enhance efficiency, speed up inspection processes, and minimise the risk of forgery,’ explained Brigadier General Wibowo.
The digital SIM is also expected to accelerate public service processes in traffic management. Beyond simplifying on-road checks, the system is integrated with various other services.
Integration with ETLE and Online Renewal
The digital SIM system will connect to online SIM renewal services, validity period notifications, and the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system.
However, Brigadier General Wibowo stressed that full implementation of the digital SIM still requires regulatory readiness and supporting infrastructure across all regions. ‘In the initial phase, we continue to advise the public to carry physical SIMs as a backup while waiting for the system to be fully operational nationwide,’ he added.
