Korlantas Polri Introduces Digital Driver's Licence Integration for ETLE

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Digital transformation is now extending to traffic administration services. Driver’s licences (SIM) are now available not only as physical cards but also in digital format accessible via mobile phones.

The introduction of digital SIM forms part of Korlantas Polri’s public service modernisation efforts to ease travel and roadside inspections for the public.

“Through the Digital Korlantas Polri app, citizens can store and display their SIM digitally,” stated Wibowo in a press release on Friday, 22 May 2026.

“The data includes owner identification, SIM number, validity period, and a QR code for verification by field officers,” he added.

Officers can verify the digital SIM stored on drivers’ phones via Korlantas’ central system. With this new system, physical SIM cards will serve only as backup documents to be kept at home.

“Going forward, SIM validity will rely on server data rather than physical cards. This will enhance efficiency, speed up inspections, and minimise forgery risks,” Wibowo said.

In addition to streamlining roadside checks, digital SIM is claimed to be more secure as vehicle owner data is stored centrally and can be verified in real time via QR code scanning.

Notably, digital SIM integrates with various electronic traffic services. Users can enjoy online renewal, validity notifications, and connectivity with the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system. This is expected to simplify vehicle administration without needing to visit traffic offices.

However, Korlantas Polri stressed that full implementation of digital SIM awaits regulatory and infrastructure readiness across Indonesia.

“At this initial stage, we still advise the public to carry physical SIM as a backup while waiting for the system to be fully operational nationwide,” Wibowo said.
