The Traffic Corps (Korlantas) of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has affirmed that information about a new rule imposing a Rp250,000 fine on motorcyclists with bald tyres is a hoax, as the sanction has long been provided for by law.

Head of the Violation Enforcement Sub-Directorate of the Korlantas Polri Law Enforcement Directorate, Commissioner of Police Dwi Sumrahadi Rakhmanto, said in a statement received in Jakarta on Sunday that the information circulating on social media about the new rule was untrue.

“Korlantas Polri calls on the public not to readily believe information circulating on social media about a new rule stating that motorcyclists with bald tyres will be fined Rp250,000 or face one month’s imprisonment,” he said.

Under Article 48, every motor vehicle operated on the road must meet technical and roadworthiness requirements, including tyres that are still fit for use.

Meanwhile, Article 285 paragraph (1) provides that a motorcyclist who operates a vehicle that fails to meet technical and roadworthiness requirements may be sentenced to a maximum of one month’s imprisonment or a fine of up to Rp250,000.

He added that Korlantas Polri would continue to prioritise preventive measures through education and socialisation, encouraging the public to routinely check their vehicle’s condition, including replacing worn or bald tyres.

These efforts are carried out as part of preventing traffic accidents while improving safety for all road users.

Dwi also urged the public to be wiser in receiving information in the digital sphere by verifying its accuracy through official Korlantas Polri channels before believing or sharing it.
