Korlantas Implements Face Recognition in ETLE System

The National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) has implemented facial recognition technology in its Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system to identify traffic violators, even those using fake number plates or vehicles without registration plates. Director of Law Enforcement at Korlantas Polri, Brigadier General Pol. I Made Agus Prasatya, stated in Jakarta on Wednesday that the deployment of this technology follows a directive from the Head of Korlantas Polri, Inspector General Pol. Wibowo. According to Korlantas Polri data from the first half of 2026, ETLE cameras recorded 16,812 violations related to vehicle number plates, either due to not using a registration plate or using a fake one. A total of 77.24 per cent of these violations were committed by motorcyclists. Agus explained that the face recognition technology allows ETLE cameras to identify a driver’s face and match it with population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil). With this system, a driver’s identity can still be determined even if the vehicle uses a fake number plate, the plate is covered, or it is not installed. In addition to strengthening the accuracy of traffic law enforcement, the technology is also expected to support the uncovering of criminal acts on the road and ensure that violation confirmation letters are sent to the correct party. Agus added that Korlantas continues to optimise patrols by Highway Patrol (PJR) personnel and the Law Enforcement Sub-directorate at violation-prone points, prioritising ETLE-based enforcement and a humanistic approach. “We are not proud of carrying out enforcement actions. Law enforcement is the last resort. We prioritise public compliance through the ETLE system and the use of technology so that safety, order, and legal certainty on the road can be realised,” he said.
